GAO Goes Undercover: IRB System Is Broken, Puts Patients at Risk

The U.S. Government Accounting Office went undercover to investigate potential flaws in the way that institutional review boards (IRBs) review and monitor clinical trials. GAO created a bogus IRB and discovered that the system is poorly overseen by HHS and FDA, prone to unethical manipulation, and puts research subjects’ lives at risk.
